:: EndNote to BibTeX

For MacOS X users, LaTeX and BibTeX are extremely easy to use, so I am thinking of switching my bibliographic database from EndNote to BibDesk, a BibTeX Killer App in MacOS X. The advantage of EndNote is that it has a lot of styles, lots of filters and outstanding connection functions. Unfortunately it doesn't support XML/RSS format, the future format of bibliography. BibDesk can export RSS and manage/preview your PDF file for the papers. That's very important when writing a paper. So I probably will convert my files between these two database. In order to reduce the dependency of Microsoft office, I have better switch.

EndNote has a very good output style for you to export bibtex format from its database. You just need to modify the "label" field of your database because EndNote uses it as an id for your bibtex entry. Does anyone has better idea that can export unique id automatically using this style? That would be great!

Today (2003/7/17) I finally generated my first complete TeX article.

(Updated) In the comment of this article, Mr. Mattes asked about how I use it. Actually, I export the pure text files using bibtex style, therefore I don't need to make a dummy rtf.
I would be happy to tell you the details:

First, make a testing library file by dragging from SCI search results.

Then change the label field to a unique id for bibtex.

Change the output style to "BibText Export".

Directly export the select references only or the whole file.

Okay, make sure to rename it as *.bib

After that, we can test our new bib file with Bibdesk.

Bibdesk shows it recognize this file.

Feedbacks

Hi Mengjuei, I had the same thought, and this is also the reason why I found (by google) your page. I think I have to use bibtex and endnote in parallel, because the search/connection facility of endnote. Now my problem and you might be abel to help me. How do I export the entire endnote database into bibtex. I have downloaded the style from the endnote webpage, but to me it looks that I have to generate first a dummy rtf file conatining all the refernces (like {#1},{#2} .. so endnote can generate a biblography in the bibtex format. What do you mean with 'you just need to modify the 'label' fieled ?

I've tried the steps above to achieve the same result as you but BibDesk will not accep the file straight off and gives a bunch of warning and syntax errors. I am using Endnote 7.0 and Bibdesk 0.85
